The Day of Saint Lucia

The year consists of a pile of days.. some just pass by, others are more important or memorable.

This particular day is a day, when if I wanted to, I could arrange a variety show in my head, remembering all the 13th of Decembers... It would be partly funny, romantic, beautiful, partly filled with jealousy, hatred and tears, and it would also contain a huge amount of dull moments spent at various Mc Donald’s eating hamburgers and waiting for the next round of Lucia singing to start.

The day of Saint Lucia has for me always been a long day, full of singing and performing. At the age of 7, every girl got to be Saint Lucia. It was the only way the schoolteachers could prevent all girls but one from crying. At 10 to 20, in my younger years, it was mostly a day when it was official which girl was the most popular or beautiful and who wasn't even close..
I was always in the later category.

In my older years, everything changed; probably I got either more beautiful or popular. Or both.

And it became a day when I was nominated by others and elected to play the part of Saint Lucia, I got the opportunity to be admired, sing solo on the stage, walk around with a white dress, and candles in the hair worrying about if I was going to faint from the heavy weight of the candle lit crown, or not...

Silly as it sounds, I was a huge ego-trip, to play the part of this decent Swedish beauty queen, just for one day.

This year, as I at least pretend to be more mature, I have only taken half the day off from work, and I will only sing at two Lucia concerts. And as I have cut my hair, I don't even qualify for Saint Lucia anymore.
It is a relief.

In my teen-age-hell years, I would never have believed that I would think like this today, but I do.

I have other dreams and goals now.
